I had a friend whose goal was to flip oit of a helicopter in a front roll fashion and I agreed that would be the most epic water entry besides skydiving into the water with scuba gear to dive once submerged. But to answer the question... I prefer the giant stride because it offers more control and you know more of what you are dropping into than a back roll.

I said before the giant stride as that is most common around here. I have recently had the luxury of slipping of the back swim step while everyone was doing the gate exit giant stride, have to admit it was smooth calm and nice. I could get used to that too.

Prefer roll but it does depend on the boat (or ship). When i dove for Cousteau we'd climb down a stern dive ladder but when in the Zodiacs we'd roll out.
