How much difference does it make as a new diver if my instructor is PADI or NAUI?

NAUI is a more intensive course and is graded on a pass/fail.  You have to be able to perform every skill to the satisfaction of the instructor.  The instructors themselves have more leeway in how they conduct the class.

PADI is a formulaic approach.  The instructors have a slate of skills and pretty much have to go straight down the slate. The grading is on a sliding scale.

Sometimes, you just don't have a lot of choice.  If you want to get certified, you just go with what's available.

The important thing is do you trust the instructors?  And do you think you can learn from them?

Great question.  It’s a question I asked before my first class.  To PADI and NAUI instructors the difference is huge.  PADI is more global and offers a very specific curriculum for each class.  NAUI is based in the US and gives instructors more leeway in personalizing classes.  Both are well respected around the world.

Here’s my analogy:  Did you take CPR from the Red Cross or the American Heart Association?  They are very different organizations but the skill is the same.

Look at student to divemaster ratio, especially in your open water class.  Look at curriculum, facilities, and personalities.  Have fun!

It is an argument of choice..both say they are better and in some points they may be. Bottom line it falls more on the operation, instructor, and yes the student. Each is a key to success!

It depends on the individual instructor
