What are three exercises to help improve one's underwater breathholding duration?

1. Use a diving brick or dive weight belt and sit on bottom of pool as long as you can. Start small and work way up, just make dam sure you can get off the bottom when you need to. Weight should just help hold you in place not be so heavy you can't get up. 2. Try swimming underwater in a pool as far as you can. 3. Working on controlling your breathing while swimming laps. If you breath every breath when you swim laps, try every other breath, then every third etc. These are just ideas, I'm no expert.

cardio workouts, like running, are supposed to help with better breath control. I am assuming this is more fro free diving, since you should never hold your breath while SCUBA diving ;-)
deep breath exercises can help too, as well as yoga, i'm told.
