I was just curious if anyone has tried this particularly on off shore structures. If you did, did you find it helped?

I have snorkeled near shore rock and coral structures along the Florida coast looking for, mostly, Snook. I did find it helpful as finding the habitat let me narrow down what parts of the beach I would fish at a particular tide.

I dive the shinnecock bridge in Long Island all the time and find new fishing spots from surveying my dives there.
