This sounds silly, but read the directions, and read them more than once.  Also become familiar with the color/light filters, which ones to use at what depths and where. Ask your local dive shop if any of them use the GoPro because I got a lot of useful tips from the guys there.  When you go on dives, check with other divers.  Find what you are most comfortable with.  I did not like the long stick thing.  I ended up mounting mine on a tray with a light.  Try different things until you find what you like and also search on You Tube.

I have a hero four and to take good pictures with it the most important thing is to have a steady hand while shooting or mount it to something non moving and your shots will be crystal clear.

Put your Gopro on a stick. My wife has a small handle she uses and mine on a stick,  video seems to be better. You can hear her breathing and the bubbles. She also seems to have more movement. I can stick my Gopro in holes, for eel shots and close to sharks. You may want to try both. Now there is light called sidekick which I love.
