Do you agree that a US ban on the shark fin trade is a bad idea?

So I should have clarified my question. Shark finning has actually been banned in the US since around 1990. But as long as the fishermen don't throw the body of the shark overboard, its free game. The article that I am including at the bottom argues that if shark finning is totally abolished, it will drive the the price of shark fins up (supply and demand). Therefore, totally banning it would actually do more harm than good instead of regulating it like is done with other species of fish.

(To also clarify, I think shark finning is a completely stupid practice in which has no nutritional/medicinal value and should be banned. However, it may not be the most practical solution for our unfortunate world we live in)

I agree with you it is a horrible thing and would love to see it banned across the planet. If shark finning were to be regulated then, it may be possible to control how much it occurs and drive down the price of shark fins and possibly reduce shark poaching. Same thing with ivory. I am not trying to argue with you as I am with you 100% (just a healthy debate) it just may be the "best case scenario"

Until we can do something about the Chinese medicine trade, nothing is safe.  The people finning sharks by the thousands are the same ones who think rhino horn has magical properties too.  I've had direct dealings with trade enforcement in this issue so I know what I'm talking about.

Shark finning should be banned in the U.S., YES! Surprised to hear that it is not already banned. Should be banned worldwide. Disgusting, greedy, wasteful practice. Here is an informative articlehttp://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-sci-sn-shark-fins-20170307-story.html

Shark finning should be banned worldwide. It is certainly NOT a sustainable fishery and one which seems to cater to only a few people.
