What was your worse scare, and how did you recover, and keep it from happening again?

I was unexpectedly out of air and my tank valve was caught on an anchor line. It could have been fatal but somehow I kept my cool, got unhooked and surfaced. I was only ~35 feet deep. It would have been a shame to have died at such a shallow depth. For more on that story check out "Blast from the Past" @http://frogmenbook.tumblr.com

1988, one year after I was certified. My husband at the time and I were scuba diving in Boynton Beach Florida. Our dive boat left us and we drifted 20 miles to Delray Beach. Took us over two hours to swim north, and the dive boat finally found us. The scary part was, it was during hammerhead aggregation season.

I was free diving off of Black Rock in Maui, HI, in about 40 feet of water. Slowly made my way down a wall of rock that became the opening of an underwater cave near the sea floor. Just as I touched down a giant sea turtle about the size of a VW came out of the shadows and swam right over the top of me. that thing was so big it literally had me frozen for a second or two until I realized what it was. Black Rock is by far the best diving spot I have ever been to.  Magical.

Wreck diving in Lake Erie. We were confined space certified and entered the wreck. My buddy was startled by a large fish in the bridge, kicking up all the silt. Immediately we were 100' down, inside a small room with 0' visibility. Our lights were useless. I had to feel my way around to find the door, then was able to grab my buddy and drag him out.

24 years ago while snorkeling at Coogee Beach Sydney Australia, I was struck in the chest in by a large stingray. The barb penetrated my heart and subsequently I was rescued and rushed hospital for lifesaving major surgery. Apparently I’m the only ever survivor of a stingray barb in the heart. I continue to freedive the ocean with its beautiful and amazing creatures however I’m much better at seeing large stingrays.
