Help me understand the need for a snorkel. I really struggle with them while diving. Any suggestions?

A lot of divers skip the snorkel after getting certified. Especially sidemount. In sidemount you want to be as streamlined as possible so the snorkel gets left behind. The snorkel has its place, for instance, haveing to make a long surface swim from shore before starting your descent.

My question to you is how does it get in the way?  I  don't know it's even there.

I like it flapping on the side of my head..said no diver ever!

If you feel the need to have on incase then get a folding one or find a way to tuck it in your bc. I don't recall a time I actually used it while diving. I get why they teach new divers to wear one, but there are better ways to be equipped as well as other ways to get back to the boat or shore without a snorkel. You can swim on your back, inflate bc remove it to under your belly and use it as a float and kick back- very easy.

In the early days snorkels were required, but now , not so much. Just another thing to get in your way. Ihavi used mine since certification.
