Does anyone know why the 80cube tank became the defacto standard?

When I first started diving in California the boats were only pumping to 2250. If you compared an 80 pumped to 2250 you got more air of you used a 72 pumped to 2250. But when they switch to pumping 3000 then everyone moved to 80s.

They are cheaper and require less maintenance that than the steel 72.
