Wow that’s a good question. In practice, I should always ask, but as a DM, I occasionally like to sneak one in by myself. I still keep an eye on the group, as that has been bread into my training, but it’s fun to go solo on occasion.

Depends on several things. First of all, is there an odd number of divers on the boat? Are multiple people diving together? I would rather tag along with a group than be saddled up with an irresponsible diver. The DM will know the experience level of everyone on the boat from the manifest, if it's a good dive operation.

I’ve been diving for close to 50 years and have taken the solo diver course. So, I generally stay close to the group but not too close.

Ask DM if I can hang close to him
