Car top (SUV top) but without the bars. I actually have a yoga mat I put on the roof of my Honda C-RV and then i put the kayak on top of that (upside down) and then i use two straps that go over the kayak and through my car doors and are ratcheted down. It works really well, i have never seen the kayak move from its place or slide at all and I've reached speeds of 60MPH. I wouldn't recommend it for long drives though, or add bow and stern straps if going for a longer drive.

is it the best way? I dunno, but it works. it is similar to using those foam blocks for car tops. make sure the yoga mat is grippy.

I put mine right on top of my jeep, but I have seen people use trailers and they have a bunch you can put on any car on amazon, if you do not have a truck or jeep.

Strapped on crossbars of van or suv.  Bought a kayak rack and didn't find it helped that much vs just strapping to crossbars.

Depends on the kayak size as well as the vehicle. We have two rather heavy kayaks we bought at end of season from a local recreation center. We like them but looking to go a bit smaller and lighter. Anyway. once bought we got Thule racks to go on top of our Jeep Cherokee and our Volvo wagon - same Thule fit both. Once part of the rack let us lay the kayak flat and another accessory allowed us to lay the other kayak sideways. This fit best on our call, although if I did it over I'd make two flat ones work.  (I have seen a nifty little trailer I guy configured for his kayaks. I'd like on of those, at least for local transport.)

Strapped on the car, boat (bow), truck bed, and a set of wheels for walking.
