Paddle out between the waves staying off to the side to avoid the crest. In smaller waves you can paddle through with some practice, make sure everything is tied off good. Larger waves ...good luck

Wish I knew this when I first started 4 years ago on vacation in Hawaii.
I kept getting knocked down and my sister being deaf would be paddleing away not knowing I had been knocked over by a wave lol.
