When ascending at the end of a dive, I have a dive watch and as I go up is says if I am going up too fast and it tells me when to make a safety stop. At the safety stop, it sets an automatic timer and when the timer is done I can continue my ascent.

I look at my computer. The dive computer is a great tool once you learn how to use it. I think they all have some type of indicator for ascent rate and if you're looking at it,  you'll know when you hit 20 feet, slow your ascent and hopefully be neutrally buoyant at 15 feet!

Interesting question, when I started diving there was some miss information out at that time. We were told if you didn't go up faster then your bubbles you would be ok. Which is not true. The other thing was you couldn't go deep enough of stay long enough to get in trouble with one tank of air. Which we know also is not true. I was cave diving in FLorida in a cave system that that you had to walk threw the woods to get to the cave system. Some time I would go home with red marked on my skin. Remember this was all most 60 years ago. Also I was using a double hose reg. No SPG when it got hard to breath I would swim out.
