I go diving all the time but, almost always I go in a dive group of at least three people. I feel that solo diving should only be done if you know the dive well enough that you won't get lost and that you know the currents and aquatic life in the dive site.

Solo diving? Meaning SCUBA alone? That goes against the #1 best practice. Always have a buddy! Never go alone. No solo SCUBA. (Sounds like this may be a new thing, which I am unaware of. Terrible idea!)

What I started to say is an instructor really a solo diver?  After all he is the only one who is a certified diver? But then I've been diving for 60 years and have made several solo dive during the years.  I have made many cave dives way before there were SPGs

Good point. Never thought about it that way. - I just wouldn't want to make a practice of solo diving as my normal method of diving. Having a buddy is good. I'm sure you taught that as well. Thanks for the follow-up.

Won't do it. Always have a buddy. You never know what might happen.

I am just about to hit my 100 dives to be able to get Solo certified. It is what I would prefer to do. I enjoy liveabords and love underwater photography. I feel that I can focus more on my photography if I am not with another diver. I am not interested just to go somewhere and dive by myself with no other support around. With the liveaboard situation, you usually have other people close around if any major issues were to arise.

In a sense, every dive I make is solo. Although there are other divers around I’m not close enough to get their attention  I usually bust taking photos. Maybe, right or wrong, but I’ve been that way for years.
