I always keep one on hand just incase I run into something, or need to cut some line from wrecks.

i always have 2 knives on me, one small one on my BC and one larger one on my leg. Never know when you might need it to cut line or something, or to bang it on your tank to make noise and get someones attention.

Never to pry anything up or off. Primarily to cut fishing line you might become entangled in. Once to cut away the plastic 6 pack can holder from around the neck of a Loggerhead.

I always dive with an eezy cut trilobite as a cutting tool. Even marine parks that prevent knives allow trilobites.

We always have a small knife attached to our inflator hose on the BCD. We have used it on several occasions. Keeping the rust off is always been a challenge.

I dive with the Spyderco Salt Assist.  Small, compact, folds blade in so exposed sharp edges, and has bith saw and blade cut.

I dove with Cousteau (Jacques). I did not carry a knife, nor do I now but I'd say it probably is a good practice.
