Any suggestions on how to keep my steel tank in good shape without using a plastic mesh cover?

Wash it good after each dive. Never let it get completely empty. If it gets empty condensation will form rusting the inside of it. For this reason, I like aluminum better but to each his or her own.

Rinse well after each use, keep air in it at all times, have it inspected annually (VIS), proper care will give long life and many great dives.
