I love night diving! Not only do you see more of the critters that are hiding during the day (crab, lobster, octopus, etc) but your attention is focused by your flashlight, so you see more of the small things that you might miss during the day. Also, because you are carrying an artificial light, you see more brilliant colors in the reef (red, orange, yellow) that are normally filtered out of sunlight by the water at depth.

I prefer early evening and night diving over any other part of the day.  Early evening is great as the reef begins to transition from day life to night and night diving is like viewing a whole other world.  Different sea life is out, the reef colors are different due to the flashlight.  I absolutely love watching octopus “dancing” along the reef, lobster and crab crawling along in search of food, and large predators searching for their next meal.  Another fun thing to do during a night dive depending on where you are is turn your light off and wave your hand watch the plankton light up.

I too love it...although I was sort of thrown into it. We'd dive at midnight off Calypso, with Cousteau. They had a habit of not turning on the lights until we reached close to the bottom. Crazy! (Lights were attached by cable to a generator on a small workboat floating above us.) Richard, author of FROGMEN

Not especially.  Had a bad experience with night diving on my last trip.  Two catastrophic gear failures turned into a long surface swim home.
