You will want to find one that is very stable (so wider would be better) - I personally don't have experience with having a canoe on open water, but a sit on top kayak could also do the trick, the nice thing about those is if water gets in them, it just drains out the scupper holes. if you get water in a canoe, it will sink... I have seen fishing kayaks with small motors on them too, so it isn't out of the realm of possibilities, i'd look into that as another option to consider. Good Luck, and always tether anything you don't want to lose onto your vessel and keep your PFD on when in a canoe or kayak on the ocean, you never know when you could flip and it won't help you if it is stored in a hatch.
