I haven't speared fish yet in my diving career, but I would definitely like to try.  To this point, I've been concentrating on mastering my dive skills before I throw something spear fishing into the mix.  I have a friend and scuba instructor that have speared for lionfish.  I know they are plentiful and as an invasive species, you are doing the ecosphere a favor by lessening the population.  You can find them anywhere from North Carolina down through the Florida Keys and I think as far south as some Central American waters along the Atlantic.  Also, I've never personally tried eating lionfish, but I've heard they are very tasty fish.

I spear out of Biloxi, MS and I have to go out about 30-40miles to get to my spots. Dive in about 85ft of water and shoot grouper and snapper. We have a lot of different wrecks and reefs over here and we have been exploring the ones that are the depths we can dive. Have really started getting into free diving at different locations and that is a whole different animal! Shoot with a mako ETR and it is a fantastic gun!

CA diver mainly like to spear the northern channel islands which has a better selection and size of fish. I prefer lingcod, halibut, rock fish many types, sheephead, calico bass to name a few. Some shore dives have produced as well.
