I had read about divers putting ice on their face to slow down their breathing rate.

Never heard of that before. I just try to stay calm and focus my breathing. I typically do not put any air in my BC when I am at depth and I use my breathing to control my bouyancy. One main thing to having good bouyancy is not just good breathing technique but also being properly weighted.

I just relax, harder to do in strong current tho. When I start breathing hard I stop all activity relax and catch my breath. I also swim laps with a snorkel and mask to control breathing for practice and exercise.Helps with breath control..
