I have many concerns about the ocean environment in this day and age. The continued reliance on offshore oil and the threat of new offshore oil development is a big concern with the present administration. We have had too many large disasters with the oil industry, but in the everyday managing of the infrastructure there are always "little" spills that go unnoticed but contribute to the larger problem. Another concern is pollution of the aquatic system, in particular, plastics. Plastics pervade the entire food web now and have replaced mercury, in my opinion, as a much more serious problem. Additionally I am concerned that the leadership in this country is now more interested in profits than protection and is ignoring science in their pursuit of more. I know you were on the Calypso with Captain Cousteau and he was an environmental protection icon that we are missing today. We need more leaders like him to bring these problems to everyone.

Like the frontbeast and boneyard have said, pollution, in particular plastic, and overfishing. Overfishing causes such a dramatic top down effect in the food chain not to mention species cannot grow to their full size anymore which puts more stress on the juveniles to reproduce quicker. And then the pollution and plastic just increases biomagnification throughout the food chain. Kind of funny since it then hurts us (humans) :)
