Is it true that Morays are docile creatures? I have heard stories on both ends of the spectrum.

As with any marine life, you should respect thanks is a wild animal. That being said, I have never encountered an aggressive moray (have never given them an excuse to be either). You will often see morays opening and closing their mouth, which looks like they are ready to attack at any moment - in reality, they are forcing water over their gills while stationary. In areas when divers routinely feed speared lion fish, I have also seen large morays come out and follow the group, just in case there is a free meal in it for them. Again, not aggressive - just curious.

They are fine if you leave them alone. Look don't touch. They have very poor eye site and depend on their keen since of smell. They do have many sharp teeth. If you smell like food and get too close you could have a negative experience. I saw a video yesterday where one followed a lion fish and got close enough to get a good sniff and decided not to eat it. Smart move on his part.

I think they Are. And the times it goes wrong. Is when some People takes it to fare and to long. Instead of enjoying it from a distance and respect it.

I have had a lot of really close photo encounters with morays and have never had a problem. Always cautious and never threatening. I’m their guest and treat them with respect.
