When paired up with a new buddy, do you take lead or follow?

Typically what ever is most comfortable for them. I have a few dives under my belt, so I am good with either. And if it makes them more comfortable I go with it.

Depends on the experience level of the diver. I am an instructor. I DM'd for a long time before becoming an instructor. You learn to read people before the dive starts. If they are inexperienced I try to stay within a few feet at all times.

I like to follow with new divers watching them. That way I can see how they are doing while underwater. Watching their breathing rate tells a lot.
