I watch and listen to other divers around me as we are all getting ready to get into the water. I enjoy diving and don't want anyone to get hurt or have a bad dive. Sometimes you can help others or point out something you see that might cause a problem. I don't mind helping others, but want to make sure I do this as not to come off as a know it all. Become I am still learning too.

I am very big on pre-dive safety checks with my dive buddy. Most people just kind of skim over the checks. My wife is my buddy most of the time and I want her, and me to have safe enjoyable dive experiences. I am a divemaster and get a llittle carried away with safety. Better safe than dead I always say.

I carry a mesh bag with me on every dive for plastic trash I find in the coral

Even when I am not teaching, I find myself watching the group both on the boat and underwater. I try to buddy with the newest diver, this most often relaxes them. Underwater, I position myself so I can react to a problem. For example, if I see someone wide eyed or breathing fast, I'll be close. Another item is my groups comfort. If I have a group of divers on an island, I make sure they know that drunk or hung over divers will not be allowed on the boat. I make this clear at the orientation meeting before the trip and so if I see someone not in condition to dive, I'll speak to them privately. So far,  in 25 years as an instructor, it has worked well.
