I'm a big fan of spinning reels. Though I know a lot of people that use the heavy duty baitcasters for surf fishing. I think it comes down to personal preference and what you are targeting.

I think it comes down to personal preference, I have always fished with a spinning reel, but I know people who do not touch them, I just grew up using those.  Check the link out for different models that you could use.

Van Staal spinning reel is my preference. Expensive and worth it because it doesn't mind going underwater, which, if you are a true surf fusherman you are going to do, a lot. Most any other spinning reel won't last a year.

I prefer spinning.  Have used Okumas and Penns with success.  I don't dunk em like some of the more Northern surf fisherman have to do.

spinning reel, something fairly 'large' too, like 4000+ (or 40 depending on brands)

I always use Penn spinning reels. Great.
