My wife dives and the other guys I dive with are instructors so I have plenty of dive buds. I am a dive master so I have to lead a lot of dives but my main squeeze is my best dive bud.

If possible, stick with the same buddy. You'll know each others air consumption, you'll know how to better communicate with them underwater, you'll probably also stick with each other better. If you don't have the luxury of having a consistent buddy, then if you get a chance to have a repeat buddy that you enjoyed diving with, certainly go with what you know. Otherwise, you never know what you might get. Always ask questions about their experience and skill and go over the lost buddy procedure with them to make sure they understand because that is one thing you don't want to miscommunicate on if something happens [of course, it doesn't help if you have one of those 'buddies' that just wander off...

Doing a buddy dive trip with someone you dove with a lot is a marvelous experience. It's like you know what their thinking. You know them come with proper well maintained gear. They know how to cooperate with you to "plan a dive". They monitor your air as you monitor theirs. Diving with a regular buddy also raises the safety level of the dive.

I have never had the opportunity to have the same buddy. But most the ones I have, I trained myself. I will not dive with someone who is not a good buddy.

Certainly prefer the same buddy but not always practical. However, don't take what I can get either. Try to plan ahead and have a reliable known buddy. Otherwise what's the point...?

I had the same buddy when I was a recreational diver.  Now that I am a divemaster, I buddy with whoever needs one.

I agree with George...my wife is my favorite dive buddy.  We were certified together and are now both dive pros. We have both dived with plenty of other divers - it's just easier and more comfortable with a buddy you know well.

I will take the same one any day, you never know who or what you can end up with.

definitely. I have a few favorite dive buddies and I'm now pretty particular about diving with anyone else!
