you can catch a variety depending on where you are at. Sometimes you can even catch Trout, Snook or Redfish. There is also a chance to catch shark (but if you do, please try to properly release them as soon as you can). What you catch will depend on what type of surf you are at (Ocean, Gulf, Lake, etc.) and what kind of bait you use.

Depends on season and location but in NC surf, you can catch flounder, trout, blue, red and black drum, pompano, spot, croaker, sharks, rays, skates, puffers, sheeps head, the occasional blue crab, sea robin and the list goes on.  Some lucky guy even caught a Tarpon from the surf not to long ago.

Bluefish off the Outer Banks in late October into November. Used to catch "monster blues" there, e.g. 20+ pounds. Great fighters.

In the surf off NJ I usually catch striped bass, bluefish, fluke, and a variety of sharks.
